Broaden Your Team's Horizons

Spring is here! It is time to shake off the winter doldrums and energize your company. Encourage your team to broaden their horizons by expanding their knowledge. People with long-term professional relationships naturally evolve to similar patterns of thoughts and action. This significantly limits corporate and personal potential. The best way to shake it up is to introduce new ideas, concepts, and possibilities.

There are two ways to revitalize the organization. First, you can bring someone in with a different perspective. This can be a key employee, consultant, or vendor. Second, you can send your employees to seminars, conferences, or back to school. New knowledge is a great way to generate energy and excitement.

Knowledge is power when its application increases value. Knowledge without application is interesting, but it does not increase sales and profitability. Before you invest in external resources or training, calculate the return on investment (ROI).

Our industry offers some of the best professional growth opportunities in conferences and seminars. Speakers will readily share information that can be leveraged into benefits. The challenge is to find the best candidates to attend so the maximum benefits can be realized. Every conference has attendees that consider it a mini-vacation from their office and family. These candidates will be eliminated if you require all attendees to:

  • Submit a proposal detailing their objectives. They must be specific and applicable to the candidate’s current job function.

  • Conduct training sessions for the rest of the staff. Everyone will ultimately benefit from the conference.

  • Find one idea that can be implemented to generate a ROI for the expense of attendance. The cost should include travel, accommodations, and conference fee.

  • Plan in-person meetings with current and potential new vendors. This is an excellent opportunity to improve existing relationships or start new ones.

  • Attend at least one session outside their own area of responsibility. It will help bridge departmental gaps.
