10 Hidden Signs Your Company is Sinking

How to Identify Internal Issues Before They Become a Corporate Crisis

Barnardsville, NC (September 18, 2009) Catastrophic business failure rarely happens without warning. There are signs of internal issues, months, sometimes years, in advance. The recent collapses in the banking industry are no exception. Poor management and lending decisions created a house of cards that toppled with the first wind. Customers, employees, shareholders, and even some of the executives seem surprised by the fall.

Internal corporate issues always have signs. Unfortunately, the early warnings don’t come with flashing lights or bells and whistles calling attention to them. They are hidden in data, gaining power, until it is too late to correct the problems.

The challenges currently faced by the banking industry will hit the retail industry soon. Our transition to a global economy is changing the way we do business. Traditional retail models and rules are losing effectiveness. Failure to adapt to the customer driven marketplace guarantees a crisis for even the best companies.

A few years ago, Debra Ellis, the President of Wilson & Ellis Consulting, wrote an article entitled “10 Signs Your Company is in Trouble.” Over the last few months, it has become the most viewed page on their website. This inspired her to update the information and create a new guide, 10 Hidden Signs Your Company is Sinking.

The guide is now available for free download at www.wilsonellisconsulting.com. It was written for multichannel retail and business-to-business companies, but most of the signs apply to other industries. In addition to the warning signs, it includes tips for identifying and resolving the internal problems.

The 10 Signs:

  1. Customer Attrition Exceeds Acquisition
  2. Your Best Customers are Buying Less
  3. Buyers are Not Completing the Life Cycle
  4. Vital Signs are Erratic
  5. Inventory is Out of Control
  6. Costs are Not Aligned With Sales
  7. Analytics are Trending Down
  8. Innovation is Evasive
  9. Employees are Unhappy
  10. You Have Lost Your Passion
